D4Science at EGEE'09 Conference

The D4Science project actively participated in the EGEE'09 conference held at the Hotel Barcelo Sants in Barcelona between the 21 and 25 September 2009. The conference was attended by more than 630 delegates from many different countries and focused on the future of grid computing in Europe and in particular the plans towards the new European Grid Initiative (EGI).

Five members of the D4Science consortium attended this international event, including the Project Director, the Technical Director, user community representatives and operational staff. They contributed to the conference agenda with 1) a Session and 2) a Demonstration.

Presentation to FishBase Consortium meeting

Two project members of the D4Science communities, Marc Taconet and Nicolas Bailly, attended the annual FishBase Consortium meeting, hosted by FAO from 7 to 9 September 2009. As part of this meeting, a traditional half-day symposium provided opportunities to FishBase members and the host organization to present the status, issues and prospects related to aquatic animals biology, ecology and biodiversity information.

Next week D4Science will actively participate in the EGEE’09 Conference and will present a demo on ‘A Virtual Research Environment for Species Distribution Map Generation and Management’.

1st D4Science World User meeting

The 1st “D4Science World User meeting” will be held from 25-26 November 2009 in the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations headquarters (Rome, Italy). It will host an international audience and distinguished guest speakers from the scientific and user communities.

The objectives of the meeting are to:

Follow up on opportunities and innovative projects implementing advanced e Infrastructures for multi-disciplinary scientific communities;
Share experiences, best practices and discuss the most recent advances in e Infrastructures with emphasis on how to exploit possible synergies;
Showcase the latest D4Science experiences in building dynamic monitoring progress reports, and the most recent results in harmonisation and combination of distributed structured data sources for generation of enhanced indicators;
Identify the perspectives of the user communities and discuss the road map for D4Science-II Virtual Research Environments.

Participation in the meeting is by invitation only. However, open applications might be considered, depending on the availability of seats.

In its latest June newsletter, OMII-UK (Open Middleware Infrastructure Institute UK) features an article entitled ‘Plenty more fish in the sea?’. With the contribution of D4Science project members, Danielle Venton from EGEE describes AquaMaps, a new tool that uses EGEE resources to investigate declining fish stocks.

The OMII-UK Newsletter gives updates on the latest developments at OMII-UK and in the e-Research field in general. It benefits from a regular readership of around 1000, and is widely distributed at key conferences.

Release of the AquaMaps VRE

On 16 March 2009 the AquaMaps Virtual Research Environment (VRE) was released. This VRE is an important part of the Integrated Capture Information System (ICIS) and is available through the project portal: http://portal.d4science.research-infrastructures.eu.

The AquaMaps VRE will provide fisheries and aquaculture scientists with AquaMaps generated using the D4Science e_Infrastructure. AquaMaps are images containing the likelihood that a species or a combination of species will live in a specific areas. AquaMaps are very important for species assessment.

Release of the Fishery Country Profiles Production System VRE

On 9th March 2009 the Fishery Country Profiles Production System (FCPPS) Virtual Research Environment (VRE) was released. This VRE is available through the project portal: http://portal.d4science.research-infrastructures.eu.

The FCPPS VRE was developed for the Fisheries and Aquaculture Resources Management Community who is now validating the release and collecting comments to further develop it.

D4Science participated in the recent FAO's Committee on Fisheries

Last week, representatives of over 115 countries met at FAO's Rome headquarters for the 28th Session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI). The 520 registered delegates discussed the program of work for FAO's Fisheries and Aquaculture Department and issues raised in the newly published "The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture".

Release of the 2nd version of the D4Science production infrastructure

The D4Science Service Activities team is pleased to announce the availability of the second version of the D4Science production infrastructure. This upgraded version supports a new scientific user community: the Fisheries and Aquaculture Resources Management (FARM) represented by FAO and the WorldFish Center.

Three Virtual Organizations (VOs) are part of the infrastructure: the Environmental Monitoring (EM) user community has access to the EM VO while the FARM user community has access to the Fishery Country Profiles Production System (FCPPS) and Integrated Capture Information System (ICIS) VOs. With the availability of this infrastructure new Virtual Research Environments can now be created to satisfy the needs of the distributed scientific communities represented in the project.

D4Science at the 4th Session of the IODE Group of Experts on Biological and Chemical Data Management and Exchange Practices

The 4th Session of the IODE Group of Experts on Biological and Chemical Data Management and Exchange Practices (GE-BICH-IV), which took place on 27-30 January 2009 in Oostende, Belgium, provided a unique forum for FAO to remain abreast of developments taking place in the Marine Biodiversity and Physical oceanography Communities of Practices, regarding the application of data standards, vocabularies and data exchange mechanisms.

In his presentation 'Perspectives on Collaborative Research Environments offered by D4Science' Marc Taconet from FAO introduced the D4Science project which is of high relevance to GE-BICH as it will bridge interoperability gaps across traditional Communities of Practices such as Fisheries, Biodiversity and Physical oceanography. The D4Science platform and its Virtual Research Environments will enable multidisciplinary scientists to work collaboratively by sharing and chaining their data sources and applications.

D4Science presented at the International Conference on Universal Digital Library

The International Conference on Universal Digital Library (ICUDL) is a yearly gathering of decision makers in the arena of digital libraries. The 4th International Conference was organized by Professor Raj Reddy from the Computer School of Carnegie Mellon University. The conference took place from 31 October to 2 November in India in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Information Technology.

D4Science is one of the main European e-Infrastructure projects, involving 11 participants such as the European Space Agency, and the WorldFish Center, supported by the Consultative Group on International Agriculture Research. Co-funded by the European Commission's Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development, the D4Science project was launched in January 2008.

D4Science aims to continue the path that the GEANT, EGEE and DILIGENT projects have initiated towards establishing networking, grid-based and data-centric e-Infrastructures that accelerate multidisciplinary research by overcoming several crucial barriers such as those related to heterogeneity, sustainability and scalability.

According to Donatella Castelli, Scientific Coordinator, CNR, "By building upon the experience acquired over the past years, we are now ready to put into production the first e-Infrastructure that will enable sharing and seamless access to heterogeneous content, service and computer resources".

The exploitation of this e-infrastructure will be initiated by serving two major fields, Environmental Monitoring as well as Fisheries and Aquaculture Resources Management.

As a result, thousands of scientists will obtain increasingly more facilities for creating Virtual Research Environments based on shared computation, storage and generic service resources offered by EGEE and DILIGENT at a European level. They will also benefit from data and domain-specific service resources provided by large international organisations among the project participants. Cooperation between these participants will also encourage the use of data streams from diverse scientific communities to perform socio-ecosystem modelling.

The primary clients of these Virtual Research Environments serving specific scenarios will be researchers, decision-makers, international and government officers, and non-governmental organisations worldwide.

As stated by Krystyna Marek, GÉANT & e-Infrastructure Unit, European Commission, "We expect that the D4Science infrastructure will have a multiplicative benefit to many scientific fields. In a not distant future it will be able to act as a catalyst for increasing the resource sharing, cooperation and cross-fertilisation among multiple communities that is necessary for addressing the many grand challenges of science and society."

As an example, the work on ecosystem modelling that the two communities will perform in D4Science can be applied to the whole domain of biodiversity management, conservation and exploitation.

Presentation of D4Science at OBIS governing board meeting on 29 April 2008

The Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) recently held its board meeting in FAO headquarters, Rome, Italy.

FAO presented an overview of the D4Science project and the "Integrated capture information system - An opportunity for strengthening Partnerships between Fisheries & Biodiversity communities".

The presentation was followed by an open discussion about possibilities offered by grid technologies and about ways of leveraging synergies through future collaboration between FAO and OBIS.
